The 70th Aeronautic Engineers Regiment’s basic tasks and missions
are:
- construction, maintenance and restoration of airfields, heliports,
landing routes, roads and access paths towards them;
- construction of fortification works for personnel, resting planes,
antiaircraft artilery and radar shelters;
- laying of minefields and unexplosive barrages, airfields and heliports
mining and/or demining, as well as EOD (explosive ordnance disposal).
History:
- The 70th Aeronautic Engineers Regiment was established on November
1st 1938, based on the High Decree no. 3758 / 03 October 1938, and it
was subordinated to the Air State Secretary; it was located in the “Great
Ruler Mihai of Alba Iulia” Barracks, in Bucharest.
- Regiment’s first fight flag was placed at the Royal Palace on
April 8th 1939, in the Throne’s Chamber.
- First Aeronautic Engineers Regiment’s commander, colonel Gheorghe
Teodorescu, was the first to have the privilege of getting the important
military symbol from King Carol the 2nd, on the occasion of HM birthday,
on May 10th 1939 .
- By the date of establishment, the Regiment was able to carry out missions
of construction, maintenance and restoration of airfields, aprons, flight
control centers, air force warehouses, roads and bridges. It could also
carry out missions of aerial navigation protection, topographical support
and many others.
- During the World War II, the Regiment brought a great contribution
in the Eastern Campaign, where it participated with three battalions
and a company, as well as in the antifascist war, where it gave engineer
support to the 1st Romanian Air Force Corps combat operations, in Transilvania,
Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
- After the World War II, the Regiment name changed several times, as
follows: 4th Airfield Regiment, 70th Engineers Regiment and 70th Aeronautic
Engineers Regiment and under 13 successive commands, while continuing
to give engineering support to the Territory Antiaircraft Defense Headquarters
units, and nowadays to the Air Force Staff.
- Over time it participated, besides its basic assignments, in the effects
removal of 1947 drought, the Tecuci-Sighetul Marmatiei railroad construction,
the effects removal of 1972 flooding and 1977 earthquake, the Danube-Black
Sea and Danube-Bucharest Canals construction, the Dambovita River arrangements
in Opera-Operetta area and Lujerului Passage arrangements.
Participation at international missions:
- 70th Aeronautic Engineers Regiment has participated with equipment
and personnel in the Multinational Exercise “CORNERSTONE 2003”.
Also, unit personnel have participated in peacekeeping missions in Angola,
Somalia, and Bosnia and Hertzegovina.
70th Aeronautic Engineers Regiment is structured in:
- two engineer battalions;
- one technical battalion;
- one security, supply and transport company.
70th Aeronautic Engineers Regiment is endowed with special equipment
for repairing, maintenance and construction of airfields, roads, works
of planes, forces and assets protection (excavators, bulldozers, cranes,
dump trucks, front loaders, compactors, etc.).
