The Romanian Air Force built Cβmpia Turzii airfield between
1952 - 1953, on the purpose of reorganization of the military
aviation and its outfitting with IL-10 aircraft, made in the former
USSR and designed to ground attack.
In 1969, an air defence-artillery unit was created on the airfield in
order to protect it against the air attacks.
In 1970 a small unit was founded for the airfield maintenance during
the training of the air force pilots and paratroops.
On the 30th of June 1982, on the Deveselu airfield - belonging
to the 91st Fighter Regiment, the 48th Fighter Squadron was established
as the core of the 71st Airbase. The squadron inventory included MIG-21
fighter aircraft.
On the 30th of June 1986, the 48th Fighters Squadron was transformed
into the 71st Fighter Regiment and continued its tasks on the Deveselu
airfield.
On the 9th of June 1987, the Regiment personnel and inventory were deployed
on the Cβmpia Turzii airfield, and on the 9th of July 1987, for
the first time a MIG-21 took off from the airfield for a training flight
.
On the 1st of June 1995, the regiment split into the 71st Fighter Airbase
and the 71st Fighter Group, both deployed on this airfield.
All the time from its foundation, the unit has placed itsself among
the best units of the Air Force, due to the pilots' proficiency
in carrying out flight missions, day and night, and all-weather, as
well as the responsibility of the logistic support personnel.
In January 2001, the unit received the first MIG-21 Lancer fighters
and the pilots started the transition for the new version.
The 71st Airbase was founded on the 1st of June 2002 according to the
Armed Forces' Reorganization Program.
PARTICIPATION IN MISSIONS AND EXERCISES
71st Airbase was assigned to take part in a series of missions and national, multinational, in Romania and abroad training exercises with MiG-21 LanceR aircraft, as well as with IAR-330 helicopters, equipped for transportation or MEDEVAC, as for example:

HUMANITARIAN MISSIONS:
As a consequence of floods, which affected our country in 2005, helicopter squadrons belonging to the 71st Airbase operated in areas covered with water, by performing:
Search and rescue missions of over 200 hard-hit people in awash area, in Timis, Caras-Severin and Mures Counties;
Food and clothes transportation.
IAR-330 MEDEVAC helicopters also performed:
People search and rescue missions with Salvamont (Mountain rescue service) Sibiu;
Medical teams and wounded people transportation in collaboration with S.M.U.R.D. Targu-Mures;
Joint missions with troops within the Ministry of Defense.
