Between the two world wars, Romanian aviation was subject to reorganization and in 1923 the General Inspectorate of Aeronautics was established as part of the General Staff. In 1932 the Ministry of War eastablished the Air State Sub-Secretariat and later on in 1936, November 16th, it was established the Ministry of Air and Navy. Between 1920-1940, Romanian Military Aviation underwent an extensive development receiving mostly Romanian-made airplanes manufactured by 7 Romanian factories: Aeronautic Arsenal, SET and ICAR in Bucharest, STC in Constantza, ASTRA in Arad, Schiell and IAR in Brasov. Over 2000 military and civil airplanes were built in Romania within 18 years based on own or licenced designes.
Military Aviation used IAR-80
Romanian fighters which became famous on the Eastern front, and bombers
manufactured by IAR Brasov (J.R.S. SM-79 based on an Italian licence improved
by Romanian engineers). Me-109E/G and He-112 fighters, Heinkel He-111
and Ju-88 bombers, Ju-87 dive bomber, Ju-52 airlift and He-114 seaplanes
were purchased from Germany.
