L-29, one of the first advanced training jets of the Warsaw Pact was designed by Aero in Czechoslovakia and flew its maiden flight in 1957.
Manufactured at Vodochody Airplane Factory, it entered the serial production in 1962. The Romanian Air Force acquired 52 L-29s for Air Force School "Aurel Vlaicu" in 1966. An improved model entered the Romanian Air Force inventory later on in 1973. The aircraft, called "Dolphin" in 1964, has a M-701 turbojet engine. Its robust configuration and undercarriage allowed landing even on grass. The aircraft was subjected to continuous developments and improvements related to its configuration, especially wings and controls.
Due to its other-than-tactical roles played, external stores have been used for training only. It includes light bombs and 2 launchers with 4 unguided reactive projectiles each under the wings. Here there are also beams for auxiliary tanks. The aircraft still is in the inventory of "AUREL VLAICU" Air Force School in Boboc.
